A traffic accident in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district caused the deaths of three people and injuries to 29 others on Friday afternoon, after a bus mounted the pavement in Sham Shui Po.
RTHK reports that at 6:37pm, an E21A Citybus was traveling towards Mong Kok when a taxi in front of it slowed down suddenly at the traffic lights at the junction of Cheung Sha Wan Road and Yen Chow Street. The bus failed to slow down in time and crashed onto the roadside. The upper deck of the bus hit a building canopy.
A 60-year-old woman on the upper deck died on the scene of the crash. Two men, 49 and 72, were found unconscious under the bus but were later certified dead at hospital.
Firefighters and paramedics extracted a total of 29 people with various injuries. Two of the injured were in critical condition on Friday night, while six were declared serious and the remainder stable.
The bus driver, a 44-year-old Hong Kong man who was uninjured in the accident, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. The driver has been with Citybus for five years and drove a E500 MMC 12-meter double decker which passed a safety test on August 25.
Police are calling for witnesses.
