A young woman who was 24 weeks pregnant died after falling into a coma in a taxi on the way to hospital on Tuesday.

Mehmood Rukhsar, aged 21 and of Pakistani origin, visited friends in Sham Shui Po in Kowloon in the afternoon with her 24-year-old husband Sohail Aamir. But, feeling great pain in her back, they got her into a taxi to go to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sing Pao reported.

However, the woman fell into a coma despite the short – five-minute – ride to the hospital.

She was immediately rushed to the accident and emergency unit. Given her critical condition, doctors decided to perform a caesarean section to deliver a baby girl.

However, the woman later died in the hospital.

The woman was understood to have a congenital heart problem. She had also suffered a miscarriage two years ago, Apple Daily reported.

An initial investigation by police found no suspicious circumstances behind her death. But an autopsy will be conducted soon to confirm the cause of her death.

The woman’s baby – born many weeks premature – is now in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit in a critical condition.
