A 21-year-old man died after being hit by a moving coffin in a “haunted house” attraction in Ocean Park Hong Kong on Saturday.
At around 2pm, the victim, a freshman at the Chinese University of Hong Kong surnamed Cheung, went to the “Buried Alive” Halloween attraction in the theme park, but failed to emerge from the haunted house, Oriental Daily reported.
Meanwhile, the attraction’s machinery stopped working. As a staffer investigated the problem, Cheung was found unconscious in an area that was supposed to be accessed by staff only, according to Eva Au Yeung, the theme park’s events and entertainment director.
Cheung was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital, where he was later certified dead.
The Hong Kong government’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department believes that Cheung was hit by moving parts in a mechanical-operations area, but found that the accident did not involve any mechanical failure.
“Buried Alive” is part of a Halloween-theme attraction that run annually at Ocean Park. Visitors clamber inside an imitation coffin that slides from the second floor to the ground before entering a maze in a dark environment, Apple Daily reported.
A spokesman for the theme park said Ocean Park was saddened by the accident and would cooperate fully with authorities in their investigation of the tragedy, Ta Kung Pao reported.
The Hong Kong government has ordered the theme park to suspend the attraction until further notice.
