A woman in Hyderabad’s Kukatpally area complained to police after her landlord refused to allow her to take the body of her 11-year-old child into her home, leaving her stranded outside in the pouring rain, media reports said on Friday.

After Y Ishwaramma’s son Suresh died of dengue fever at government-run Nilofer Hospital, she brought his body home, only to be told by her landlord, Jagadish Gupta, that it would be inauspicious to allow it to be taken inside, The Indian Express reported.

Gupta was quoted as saying, “My daughter got married less than a year ago. It is against our sentiment to bring any dead body inside the house.”

Local people provided a freezer to store the body in.

Officers at Jagadgirigutta’s police station did not register an official complaint, insisting that they were unable to intervene.
