Lyu Ruifeng, the 62-year-old former deputy mayor of Shenzhen, is suspected of taking bribes and is under investigation by the Municipal People’s Procuratorate in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, Caixin reported.
A suspected accomplice, Wu Chunmei, is also under investigation, with coercive measures being taken by the municipal procuratorate, Xinhua reported.
There is no further details about the charge. But it is confirmed that Lyu bears the major responsibility for the landslide accident in a muck-dumping field in Guangming New Area in Shenzhen at the end of 2015.
A report released by the State Council’s investigation team showed that Lyu oversaw safety issues in the area, and it has been recommended that he be dismissed from the post and placed on probation within the Communist Party of China.
The landslide accident resulted in at least 73 deaths, leading to a direct financial loss of 880 million yuan (US$134.89 million).
