The first satellite images of the site of North Korea’s latest nuclear test show unprecedented above-ground landslides, according to 38 North, a respected website sponsored by the US-Korea Institute of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
The exclusive analysis by experts Frank V. Pabian, Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., and Jack Liu says satellite photos appear to show numerous landslides thoughout the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site and beyond after the powerful underground test was conducted on September 3.
“These disturbances are more numerous and widespread than what we have seen from any of the five tests that North Korea previously conducted,” the analysts wrote.
Data is still being evaluated, but 38 North speculates that Pyongyang’s latest device might have had a yield about eight times more than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, and about six times that of the fifth test conducted at Punggye-ri on September 9, 2016.
