A dependent of a Filipino maid who was killed three years ago by a falling cabinet in the apartment where she worked filed a writ to the Hong Kong High Court on Tuesday against the woman’s employers, alleging negligence and requesting an unspecified amount of compensation.
The fatal accident occurred in an apartment in The Metropolis, a residential estate in Tseung Kwan O, New Territories, on October 3, 2014. Espinar Raquel Fortes, 45, died after a 1.5-meter-long cabinet fell from a wall while she was sleeping, severely injuring her head, Ming Pao Daily reported.
The employers’ son, then a four-year-old boy, who was sleeping beside the maid was unhurt. He ran to the next room to tell his father about the accident.
The maid was sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital but was certified dead.
In a writ filed with the High Court, lawyers acting for the maid and her dependent Espinar Anita Fortes claimed that the victim had died as a consequence of her employers’ negligence and breach of duty of care, Oriental Daily reported.
The defendants in the case are the deceased maid’s employers Ip Ka-man and Cheung Yat-ki.
A hearing has been scheduled for February 22, Apple Daily reported.

Ibwonder what the cabinet contained ad who was responsible of loading it. It will be ironic if the accident was triggered by unoroper distribution of weight and that it was the domestic helper whomoved things around during cleaning. It has been my experience that most if the domestic helpers need to be suppervised and be trained in regards to safety, but also their employers do know much about it.
Pag bayarin nyo yan
No one can ask me 2 read again?….sa comments ko wala akong binatikos….kaya pde lang ..respect the opinion of others.kong ano man ang opinion ng iba….need kong respi2hin….kc bawat isa may sariling opinion. ..
Read again po. Last Tuesday lang nai file and Negligence case against the employers. When it comes to Labour cases, the HK government is quick to respond. Don’t be misled.
Read again. The incident happened three years ago but the dependent filed a Negligence case LAST Tuesday. And the reason…ASKING FOR UNSPECIFIED AMOUNT AS COMPENSATION. .
Terrible situation. I hope this maid’s dependants get compensation. Very very sad. This should never have happened. Why have a cabinet in such an awful/potentially dangerous position?
Depends upon ur upbringing!
Walang madaling KASO..nililitis til dulo…..buti nga after 3 years nag karoon ng finale…..ung ibang kaso minsan inaabot ng 5 years or more than pa….atleast ngaun ok na.
So so sad to hear that news….
Rest&Peace
My deeply condolence to her family.
