Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Chidambaram

A day after Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal disqualified 18 All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLAs belonging to a rebel group led by TTV Dhinakaran, Congress leader P Chidambaram  said it was a “blatantly partisan” move intended to help the minority government, according to media reports.

Chidambaram took to microblogging site Twitter, saying: “18 MLAs disqualified to manufacture a majority for paralyzed TN Govt. TN is theatre of the absurd. If TN Speaker is correct, no elected leader of a legislature party can be changed by dissenting MLAs! Once elected, Chief Minister for 5 years!”

On Monday, Asia Times reported that in case of a likely floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the government of Chief Minister EK Palaniswami could sail through easily as the decision by the speaker has reduced the strength of the Assembly to 110 from 117 before the disqualification.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao on Tuesday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, reportedly to brief him about political developments in the state, News18 reported.
