An Indian Administrative Service officer in Haryana on Monday praised his daughter on Facebook for taking on “the worst form of chauvinism” in society, after they publicly announced that she was “harassed and stalked” by Haryana BJP President Subhash Barala’s son Vikas and his friend, according to media reports.
The two allegedly stalked, harassed and tried to abduct the daughter of Virender Kundu, a senior Haryana IAS officer on Friday night in Chandigarh.
Varnika Kundu alleged that while she was returning home late on Friday, a man and his friend harassed her, chased her and tried to open her car door while she was driving alone. The police arrested them after the woman lodged a police complaint the same night. The accused, Vikas Barala, who is reportedly studying law, and his friend Ashish Kumar were booked for stalking and drunk driving. They were released on bail soon after.
Kundu wrote on Facebook,”You have chosen to take on the worst form of chauvinism manifested in our society. My difficulties on account of this decision are nothing compared to yours. Our target is to ensure that the guilty are brought to book. They are adult men, students of law, who are fully aware of the consequences of their actions, and hence must be appropriately punished for their offenses committed.”
A police officer told IANS, “Ever since it became known that the arrested youth was the son of the Haryana BJP chief, the whole effort has been towards ‘Beta Bachao’ [Save girl child] by the high and mighty. Chandigarh Police is under pressure to dilute the matter.”
