The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that insurance companies cannot renew a policy on a vehicle until the owner provides a pollution under control (PUC) certificate, according to media reports.

The apex court heard a plea filed by an environmentalist, MC Mehta, pertaining to rising air pollution levels in New Delhi. The court has given the central government four weeks to ensure that there are PUC centers operating in the National Capital Region to ensure that vehicles meet the requirement.

ANI reported in January that the apex court had warned about the growing problem of air pollution and said developing a solution must be treated as a top priority.
