A 48-year-old female tutor who hit an 11-year-old boy with a massage stick 20 times during a class was sentenced to 100 hours of community service by a West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Wu Chui-king, 48, pleaded for leniency on the charge of willful assault causing injury to a child at the Kowloon Chai Kai Fong Welfare Association in Yau Yat Chuen, where she had worked as a tutor for 17 years, Apple Daily reported.

On April 11, the boy told his father after tutorial class that Wu had hit his hip very hard with a plastic massage stick 20 times after he repeatedly failed to get the right answers in his mathematics homework.

The beating caused bruises on his hip, and his father reported the case to the police.

Acting principal magistrate So Wai-tak said he was shocked after viewing photos showing how bad the bruises on the boy were.

So said the case was serious as Wu had violated the trust of the boy’s parents. However, she had been detained for two weeks and believed that she had learned a lesson.
