Thousands of people belonging to the Maratha community from different parts of Maharashtra converged on Mumbai on Wednesday to demand that government jobs and education opportunities be reserved for natives of the state.
Amid tight security, the massive silent march began at the Jijamata Udyan in Byculla in the morning with participants carrying saffron swallowtail flags.
Protesters arrived in the city in private vehicles as well as public modes of transport. Police and traffic personnel were deployed in large numbers to manage the huge inflow of people and the movement of vehicles in Mumbai.
Mumbai’s famed dabbawalas (lunchbox deliverymen), the majority of whom belong to the Maratha community, also joined the march.
The Maratha is a group of castes mainly found in the state of Maharashtra.
