A 19-year-old engineering student died after an illegal abortion caused her excessive bleeding at a private nursing home in Hyderabad on Monday, according to police. She was seven months pregnant.
The woman was in a relationship with 21-year-old Madhu S, who took her to the private hospital on August 5 to terminate her pregnancy. A doctor gave her the pills and also reportedly charged Rs20,000 (US$314) for the procedure.
After a complaint was registered by the girl’s father, the police arrested the doctor for allegedly causing death by miscarriage, and Madhu has been booked for cheating, NDTV reported.
A police official said, “She was administered a pill on admission, following which the fetus was aborted. The girl, however, experienced heavy bleeding and fell unconscious. Later, the doctor asked her boyfriend to shift her to another hospital where she was declared brought dead. She had met her photographer boyfriend at a function over a year ago and later entered into a relationship with him. The girl’s parents were unaware of her pregnancy or her admission to the hospital for abortion.”
In India, abortion is legal only up to 20 weeks under specific conditions. It is unclear whether the hospital had the required certification to perform abortions.
