Firemen rescued a 31-year-old mother and her two young children after she was found burning charcoal at home in Tung Chung on Lantau Island on Wednesday.

The woman, surnamed Wong, is a single mother who tried to kill herself and her two-year-old daughter and five-month-old son by burning charcoal in the flat at Mun Yat House in Yat Tung Estate after a quarrel with her mother, 55, in the morning, Apple Daily reported.

Wong’s mother left the flat after the quarrel, but at around 1pm she received a photo via WhatsApp from Wong showing a tray with burning charcoal.

The mother rushed to Wong’s home but the door was locked. She found smoke coming out from the flat so she called police immediately.

When firemen broke into the flat, Wong and her two children were lying conscious on a bed. They were sent to North Lantau Hospital.

Wong was later transferred to Kwai Chung Hospital while the two children were sent to Princess Margaret Hospital, Sing Tao Daily reported.

The police categorized the case as ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person. No one has been arrested or charged so far.
