Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Wednesday that the state government would write to New Delhi asking for a ban on “Blue Whale,” an online game that has been linked to teenage suicides worldwide, PTI reported.

Vijayan was responding to a statement made in the Assembly by Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI-M legislator Raju Abraham, who said there have been about 2,000 downloads of the game in Kerala alone.

The chief minister was quoted as saying,”It is the responsibility of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team to take necessary action in this regard. We will ask the [central government] to ban the Blue Whale game in the country.”

A Mumbai teen recently committed suicide after messaging friends to say that he had been playing the game and that he would not be at school on Monday.

Blue Whale is a 50-day-challenge that is believed to have originated in Russia. A series of tasks are assigned to players by the game administrators, each one potentially fatal, with the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide.
