A 36-year-old Indonesian caregiver has won hearts and praise for her unconditional love and efforts to take care of elderly people in need at her employer’s home as well as at a charity nursing care center.
Yuni first came to Yilan, Taiwan, six years ago as a nursing care worker at the home of employer Huang Wen-ming, whose wife was in need of intensive care after falling into a vegetative state after suffering a stroke, The Liberty Times reported.
Huang told the paper he was deeply moved by the dedication shown by Yuni, who treated them as if they were her own parents. He said he was fortunate to have a “daughter” who would genuinely care for him and his wife so dearly.
The old man recalled that Yuni had once burst into tears when she got glimpses of the pain on the face of his wife while she was cleaning and changing the dressing for bed sores on the elderly woman’s hips.
Huang’s wife passed away in May this year and Yuni is now working for a new family, but the caregiver still takes leave once a month to visit Huang.
According to China Times, Yuni, with the support of Huang, has become the first foreign volunteer at the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation. She has been doing nursing care work and giving massages to patients in a vegetative state at the Foundation’s Luodong branch since 2015.
Yuni said she regarded Taiwan as her home, and did not feel alone as she the Huang couple had been like her “parents” and Liu Mei-hui, another volunteer at the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, was like an “elder sister”.
Her greatest reward and satisfaction came from times when she looked after her “parents”. Individuals’ micro-reactions and responses during massage sessions reassured her that they could hear her and feel her.
