A newly recruited Hizbul Mujahideen militant and a civilian were killed during a gunfight in Kanelwan village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district late Thursday night, according to media reports.

A search operation was launched by the army, Central Reserve Police Force, and Jammu and Kashmir police after they received a tip-off about the presence of three terrorists in Kanelwan, PTI reported. During the two-hour encounter, two militants managed to escape in the darkness, while one militant, Yawar Nissar, was killed.

An officer said, “One self-loading rifle, two magazines, 40 rounds, one Chinese hand grenade and a pouch was recovered from his possession. One soldier of 3 RR, namely Rifleman Rohit Kumar No. 13771129K, also sustained injuries.” The officer added that Nissar joined the group less than two weeks ago.

Nissar’s body was handed over to his family for burial at around 3 am. As a preventive measure, restrictions were imposed in the town.

An unidentified civilian motorcyclist was also killed during the operation. The officer was quoted as saying, “A cut-off party of army retaliated [to the] fire. Later on, it was learnt one individual riding a motorcycle Yamaha Libero (JK13-527?) with erased last numeral got killed in cross firing.” Two phones were recovered from the individual’s body, and police have released his picture for identification.
