At least 42 children, mostly newborns, died in the last 48 hours at a hospital in Gorakhpur, barely three weeks after 70 infants died at the Uttar Pradesh facility, reportedly due to oxygen supply problems, according to media reports.
According to PTI, 290 children have died at Baba Raghav Das Medical College in August, 213 of them in the neonatal ICU and 77 in the encephalitis ward.
Dr PK Singh, the recently appointed working principal of the medical college hospital, said children suffering from medical problems such as jaundice, pneumonia, infectious diseases and encephalitis are admitted to the hospital, mostly in a very serious condition.
Nine people have been booked in connection with the deaths of dozens of children earlier this month at the hospital, allegedly as a result of an insufficient supply of oxygen. On August 12, the state government ordered an official inquiry to probe the deaths.
