Discovery Bay domestic worker Liza Avelino accomplished another big challenge by reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa last Friday.
The 46-year-old Filipino maid, who has worked in Hong Kong since 1996, reached the 5,895-meter-high Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, one of the Seven Summits (the highest peaks of the seven continents), Avelino posted on her Facebook.
Avelino’s expedition is set to raise HK$150,000 (US$19,171) for a non-profit group HELP for Domestic Workers, as she wanted to show the world the positive contribution made by domestic workers.
Avelino told the South China Morning Post she was really happy that she had completed her mission, while all her friends were very proud of her.
She said she had suffered some altitude sickness as she neared the summit but she walked slowly towards the end.
“When I finally got there, I cried,” she told the newspaper.
Avelino climbed Imja Tse, or Island Peak of the Himalayas in Nepal (5,900 meters) in April.
