Three soldiers, including a major, were killed in a clash with militants on Thursday morning in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, according to police.

Acting on a tip-off, the army launched a cordon-and-search operation in Zaipora village in Shopian district to find three militants hiding there.

The Times of India reported that the soldiers were airlifted to a military base hospital in Srinagar, but later succumbed to their gunshot wounds.

A police official said, “Following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in Matribugh Zoipora village of the district [Shopian], a cordon-and-search operation was launched by a joint party of 62 RR of Army, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force.”
