Three men suspected of carrying beef in their truck were beaten up by locals and arrested on Thursday in Bhojpur, Bihar, ANI reported. The driver of the truck insisted that the cargo was buffalo meat.

The locals, who claimed that illegal slaughterhouses had been operating in the area for a few months, were trying to set the vehicle on fire when the police arrived at the scene and confiscated it.

A police officer said, “A truck was intercepted by locals on the suspicion that it was carrying beef … we’ve seized the truck and arrested three persons in this regard and further investigation is on.”

Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation denouncing violence against beef-eating minorities, attacks perpetrated in the name of cow protection are on the rise.
