A 10-year-old Chandigarh rape victim gave birth to a baby girl in a government hospital on Thursday morning, after India’s Supreme Court denied her permission to get an abortion due to medical risks, according to media reports. The girl became pregnant after her uncle repeatedly raped her over seven months.

Both the mother and child were in stable condition after the delivery, and the newborn was kept in the neonatal intensive care unit, IANS reported.

A doctor said before the Caesarean section delivery, “The child is too young for a normal delivery. Her pelvic bones are not strong enough to push the baby and she doesn’t have the stamina to bear labour pain.”

The girl’s parents were only recently told of her pregnancy when they took her for a check-up after she complained of stomach pain.

Unaware of her pregnancy, the girl was told that she had a stone in her stomach that had to be removed before she underwent the procedure. The baby will be put up for adoption.
