A 42-year-old Hong Kong man surnamed Wong and a 37-year-old Bangladeshi man, an asylum seeker, were arrested on Friday in Yuen Long, New Territories, for allegedly stealing some wooden pallets.
At noon, the two men parked a rented van near the toll booth in Tai Lam Tunnel in Yuen Long. Police checked the vehicle and found 23 wooden pallets in it, Oriental Daily reported.
The duo allegedly behaved suspiciously when they were questioned about the sources of the pallets.
They were then arrested, as they had allegedly taken the pallets from Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong districts and planned to sell them, police said, citing an initial investigation.
It was believed that Wong had hired the Bangladeshi man as an illegal worker, Sing Pao reported.
Wong will face charges of theft and employing an illegal worker, while the Bangladeshi will be charged for theft and breach of condition of stay.
Police are investigating the case and could not rule out the possibility that the duo might have involved in other cases.
