A 46-year-old information-technology manager was jailed for nine weeks by a Singapore court on Thursday after pleading guilty to molesting a woman on a metro train by pressing his groin against her buttocks in March.
At 8:45am on March 16, the 28-year-old victim was traveling from Kembangan on the Mass Rapid Transit East-West Line in the train’s second-last compartment, The Straits Times reported. She felt something hard pressing against her buttocks during the ride between Paya Lebar and Aljunied stations, the court heard. She moved away, presuming the physical contact was by accident.
However, shortly afterward the victim felt another touch, which prompted her to look around and check. She observed the defendant, Rajagopala Soundararaja Panneer Selvan, standing behind her.
She walked away but Selvan followed and initiated the unwanted contact for the third time, at which time the victim caught him pressing against her buttocks.
The victim filed a report to the police that evening.
The defendant’s lawyer told the court that Selvan regretted the crime and promised not to commit it again.
In Singapore, for molestation charges, offenders shall be jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or some combination of those penalties.
