Mumbai police detained seven Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for allegedly destroying a Dadar jewelry store’s Gujarati nameplate, ANI reported.

In 2008, MNS launched a campaign to force businesses across Mumbai to use the Marathi regional language on their signboards. The campaign, which was halted after the intervention of the Bombay High Court, resurfaced again on Friday when the protesters removed the signboard forcibly.

MNS leader Santosh Dhuriwas quoted as saying, “We will not allow anyone to sideline Marathi language. This Gujarati signboards is a new trend and we will not allow it.”
