Maharashtra police will be equipped with special detection kits next month to determine if meat they have seized is beef, according to media reports.
About 45 forensic vehicles equipped with the kit, which costs Rs8,000 (US$124), will be deployed across the state.
Krishna Kulkarni, director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), told the Hindustan Times that the kits can determine if meat is from a cow within 30 minutes, streamlining the investigative process.
Kulkarni was quoted as saying, “If preliminary tests reveal that the meat is that of a cow, we will collect samples and conduct a DNA test in the FSL. We will then draw up a final report.”
