A 40-year-old Indian construction worker was jailed for four years and nine months and ordered to receive four strokes of the cane by a court in Singapore on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a charge of attempted rape.

At around 8pm on January 24, 2016, a 29-year-old Indonesian woman – a former domestic worker traveling to Singapore as a tourist – met Jagraj Singh, 33, whom she had met earlier at Choa Chu Kang Park, The Straits Times reported.

Singh was with some compatriots whom the woman had never met. After joining the group for 10 minutes, Singh and the woman went to a grassland, where they had consensual sex.

After that, Daler Singh, who grew up with Jagraj Singh in the same village in India, asked to have sex with the woman, but she refused. The trio then went to a nearby pavilion to share some fruit. About 15 minutes later, Jagraj Singh and the woman went to the grassland again but the former returned to the pavilion shortly after.

Daler Singh then went to the grassland and asked the woman a second time to have sex with him, but she rejected him again. He tried to rape her but failed, as the woman covered her private parts with her hands.

Ten minutes later, the woman left the park alone and stopped a passerby, who called the police, Channel NewsAsia reported. Daler Singh was arrested at Ama Keng Hostel two days later.
