An escalator accident happened at South Horizons Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station in Ap Lei Chau on Hong Kong Island on Tuesday.

At 8:35 pm, the escalator connecting the concourse and Exit B of the South Horizons station on the South Island Line came to a sudden halt. A number of plates at the top of the escalator, which was moving upward, were smashed and damaged.

A witness, surnamed Leung, said he heard a bang when the accident happened. People then screamed and shouted to alert others not to use it, Apple Daily reported.

Leung said the situation was alarming as some people were holding babies and young children.

The escalator service was suspended for repair and maintenance. No one was injured.

An MTR spokesperson said the contractor responsible for maintenance of the escalators was immediately notified and inspection arranged.

According to hk01.com news website, there have been at least 10 incidents related to escalators at MTR stations reported since January.
