A new strategy spearheaded by China’s president himself aims to tap the private sector’s cutting-edge and cost-effective technology to boost China’s military capabilities.

Xi created a Military-Civil Integration Development Commission this year, with himself as its head, and the efforts were on display at an exhibition held last week in Beijing, reports the Financial Times.

A representative from China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation explained the initiative to allow competition from the private sector: “This is what everyone is doing now, especially the US. That is why we must do this as well.”
