A navy ship carrying members of the People’s Liberation Army departs Zhanjiang in south China’s Guangdong Province for the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti yesterday [Tuesday] to set up China’s first overseas military base.

The base will support anti-piracy, UN peacekeeping and humanitarian relief missions in Africa and west Asia. It will also facilitate military cooperation, joint exercises, emergency rescue efforts, the evacuation and protection of overseas Chinese, and help maintain security of strategic seaways. — Xinhua, via Shanghai Daily.
