An Air India employee was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 400 grams of gold concealed in the battery compartment of a mobile phone at Mumbai international airport on Wednesday, PTI reported.

Khan Mohammed Arif,  a contract employee of Air India Air Transport Services Ltd (AIATSL), was found to have gold worth Rs11 lakh (US$17,000) in one of two mobile phones he was carrying during a frisk search by a Central Industrial Security Force constable.

Air India spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar told PTI, “The services of the staff [member] of AIATSL, the subsidiary of Air India, who is detained by security agency in Mumbai, have been terminated with immediate effect.”
