A 42-year-old Muslim woman admitted in a Singapore court on Monday of abusing her 28-year-old Indonesian maid for three months in 2015 and 2016.
The employer pleaded guilty to six counts of voluntarily causing hurt to her domestic worker Intan Atikah over incidents in December 2015, and in February and March 2016.
The Muslim woman, her husband and three children aged four to eight abused and humiliated Atikah since she started working for them in April 2015 in their Housing Development Board flat in block 427, Clementi Avenue, the Chinese-language Lianhe Zaobao reported.
The court heard that neighbors had seen the family’s eight-year-old daughter slap the maid’s face and hands in public and they constantly heard shouting and crying from the defendant’s apartment.
On December 12, 2015, the employer spat on Atikah, who is also Muslim, five times and shouted at her for not finishing the ironing on time at 9am.
Her neighbors called the police, but when officers arrived, the woman hugged her maid to show nothing had happened. She also ordered Atikah to tell the officers that it was her fault for not finishing her job on time. Later that day, the employer stood on the maid’s left foot until it had swollen, but did not allow her to see a doctor.
On February 27 last year, the woman scolded the maid for having failed to control the children at a cemetery, Shin Min Daily News said. The employer pulled off the maid’s tudung and threw it away and her eight-year-old daughter hit the maid’s back.
On March 6 last year, the maid woke up 10 minutes late after caring for the employer’s mother overnight. The employer shouted “bitch” and “whore” at Atikah, who fled the apartment, but was caught and taken back by the couple.
Neighbors called the police after they heard the maid crying loudly, who then told officers about the multiple incidents of abuse.
The prosecutor is seeking a four-month prison term for the employer, who had a history of failing to pay her maids on time. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 28.

Why mentioned "muslim" woman? Bad act is a bad act by anyone but why the tag it to religion?
Is this reporter has problen with muslis? Is it necesasry to put there "muslim woman"? We have more cases that still pending and waiting for final result being done by non muslim too and in some cases, the died. Just like the case in Bishan last year and the empkoer and her mom are taken by the police fir cousing the death of a dimestic helper and the case is still pending and in tbis case it involed a non muslim family(local indian) with the husban is workung with Singapore Police Force. This is the first time I’m reading some like this with a report use the words(muslim woman).
4 mnths prison is not enough that’s y mny employer continue to abuse their maids bcoz the punishment of employer just months in jail y not banned in taking maids again ofcourse if they hve maid again surely they will abuse again and maybe worse abuse they do?
