US housing starts were down 5.5% during May, much lower than the consensus estimate of a 4.1% gain. That is particularly disappointing given the fall in mortgage borrowing costs (from 4.06% for a 30-year mortgage at year-end to 3.81% today). Year on year, housing starts were down 2.6%.
