Meeting with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi on Thursday, Trump said the US is open to cooperating on Belt and Road projects, in a sign that the president’s tack towards warmer relations with Beijing has not changed.
Cooperation from US on the projects would be “a boon for China-U.S. relations,” He Weiwen of the Beijing-based Center for China and Globalization was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. “The Belt and Road projects are so big that Chinese companies can’t do them alone. They need to find partners elsewhere, including the U.S.”
The support for Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative comes with the announcement that Trump will meet Xi for a second time next month, and the president plans to travel to China before the end of the year.
