The authorities in Mumbai are warning people to be careful on the waterfront at high tide, after a teenager suddenly slipped while trying to touch a wave and was washed out to sea, according to media reports.

Preeti Shrikrishna Pise, 17, was one of many Mumbaikars who had flocked to Marine Drive on Tuesday to see waves as tall as 4.81 meters, ANI reported.

Police denied reports that the girl slipped because she was taking a selfie at the time.
