Doctors in Kerala pulled a 7cm worm out of a woman’s eye in an operation that was recorded on video and became a creepy internet sensation, according to The Indian Express.
The 56-year-old, identified as Lalitha, went to Kerala’s Ernakulam General Hospital to seek treatment for an irritated eye and was told it had been invaded by a parasitic worm of the dirofilaria genus.
The worm, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and lice, is known to cause elephantiasis.
After giving her a local anesthetic, doctors performed a 10-minute operation to remove it. She is expected to make a full recovery.
