Amid growing tensions across the country over cow vigilantism, which has included lynchings and other heinous acts of violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally broke his long silence on the issue, according to media reports.

Speaking at the Sabarmati Ashram centenary celebrations in Ahmedabad on Thursday, Modi said, “Killing people in the name of cows is unacceptable. No one has the right to take the law into his/her hands. We belong to a land of non-violence. Violence is not the solution to any problem.”

Modi added, “Let’s all work together. Let’s create the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams. Let’s create an India our freedom fighters would be proud of.”
