The Li Ka Shing Foundation announced on Sunday that secondary schools in Tuen Mun will be included in its cash giveaway scheme next year, making it the third district to benefit from the charity.

The foundation said that more than 10,000 students in 91 secondary schools will benefit following the expansion of the “Decide Well, Spend Wisely” scheme, up from the current 5,700-plus students at 51 schools in the Yuen Long and Islands Districts, Apple Daily reported.

Each of the qualified Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) students who register with the foundation can receive a cash gift of HK$5,000 without condition.

A total of 4,244 participants responded to a questionnaire from the foundation regarding how they spent the money, Wen Wei Po reported.

Seventy percent of students said the money went mainly toward their studies by paying for public examination registration fees, buying practice materials for tests and attending tutorial classes.

Some replied that they bought new clothes for their younger siblings, with some also making onward donations to other charities.
