Hong Kong police have advised the public to avoid designated security zones in Wan Chai and Admiralty during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the city’s handover from Britain to China.
People should avoid going to Admiralty and Wan Chai North, where there will likely be traffic congestion, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Cheng Yiu-mo at a media briefing about traffic arrangements on Tuesday.
From Thursday early morning to Saturday noon, police will seal off Convention Avenue and the north side area of Harbour Road and will check all vehicles entering and leaving the area.
Bus stops on Convention Avenue and at the Wan Chai North Temporary Public Transport Interchange will stop service during the period, affecting 25 bus routes.
Police said they will also temporarily change some areas into security zones in anticipation of potential changes to Xi’s schedule. They said closure times will be made as short as possible.
Drones are banned from flying over Victoria Harbour between 9am on Thursday and 6pm on Saturday due to anti-terrorism restrictions.
