Four men who were allegedly responsible for robbing the former Hong Kong football team captain on May 24 were arrested in Sham Shui Po, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon City, over the weekend. Police say a fifth man has not been found.
At 9am on May 24, the 43-year-old former footballer, Lee Wai-man, was ambushed and attacked in Fortune Metropolis mall, in Hung Hom, by five masked men who boarded a minivan and fled with 10 million Japanese yen (US$89,400) and 24 gold bars worth an estimated HK$7.5million (US$0.9 million).
Lee has not explained in detail to police why he was carrying these assets, according to Sing Tao Daily.
Apple Daily reports that the police reviewed closed-circuit television footage of the mall and its surroundings and were able to identify the suspects as they had arrived at the site without masking their faces.
Three men of Pakistani origin, two of whom are reported to have temporary permits for Hong Kong, and one Hong Kong Chinese man, all aged between 26 and 42, were arrested during an operation lasting from Saturday night until Sunday morning.
Police confirmed most of the stolen valuables were also recovered, Sing Tao Daily reported, adding that they are continuing to investigate the case and hunt for the remaining suspect.
