A Chennai man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly slashing the throat of his ex-girlfriend in front of her family at their Royapettah home, according to reports.

About 11 months ago, M Safiullah, 28, befriended the victim, 23-year-old Sayeeda Saba Fatima, on social media. He began to visit her on the pretext of buying shirts she sold online. However, their blossoming relationship soon deteriorated and she broke it off.

A police officer was quoted as saying, “Since he failed to keep promises, the woman’s family members started opposing her relationship with the man.”

Safiullah went to the victim’s home with a knife that police said he took from a fish stall run by his father. After a brief argument, it is alleged that he slashed her throat and then cut her sister when she intervened. They were both rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
