A Gujarat-based diamond broker was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs when he allegedly tried to smuggle 3.1kg of gold worth Rs95 lakh (US$148,000).
According to reports, Vipul Nathubhai, who is from Surat, traveled from Dubai with 27 gold bars.
Officials say Vipul wrapped the bars with black adhesive tape and placed them in a metal “Jim Beam” liquor box he got at a duty-free shop at Dubai airport.
An official was quoted as saying, “Examination of his baggage resulted in the recovery of 27 gold bars of 10 tolas each, collectively weighing 3.132 kgs and valued at Rs95 lakh.”
