Chinese state media reports that China has developed an ultra-quiet submarine engine that uses a “shaftless” pump-jet and a revolutionary silent propulsion system to evade its adversaries.

Popular Science says the engine resembles the engine used by the Soviet submarine in Tom Clancy’s book (and, later, the 1990 film), “The Hunt For Red October.”
