A former Calcutta High Court judge who had been evading arrest for weeks was arrested in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and taken to Chennai on Tuesday, according to media reports.

The Supreme Court of India sentenced 62-year-old CS Karnan to six months’ imprisonment for contempt of court on May 9 but he absconded. Karnan, who retired on June 12, was the first sitting High Court judge to be jailed by the apex court.

Karnan was transferred to Kolkata after he made corruption allegations against other judges of the Madras High Court, including the Chief Justice.

A seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar held Karnan guilty of contempt.
