Bangalore police have accused a 24-year-old ragpicker of abducting, torturing and raping a five-year-old girl.

According to reports, D Veeresha confessed to abducting her early on Saturday when she emerged from her makeshift tent to relieve herself and then cutting her fingers and hitting her on the head with blunt instruments.

A local resident spotted the girl lying unconscious with head injuries in a makeshift tent and informed the KG Halli police, who rushed her to Bowring Hospital.

The Bangalore Mirror quoted an officer as saying, “While conducting the medical examination after the girl was brought in around 3 am, the night duty medical officer of Bowring hospital noticed bleeding. After confirmation of sexual abuse, the KG Halli police registered a case of rape (376IPC) and also under various sections of [the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act].”
