The world’s largest social media site, Facebook, was down in large parts of Asia, Australia and North America on Tuesday morning. Twitter was also down in Hong Kong.
What’s more, the Facebook crash reportedly locked users out of applications which are linked to it via automatic login, including Tinder, Netflix, Instagram and numerous e-commerce and fitness apps.
Facebook Australia confirmed the local outage, blaming an unspecified technological problem, News.com.au reported.
“Earlier today, some Facebook users were unable to access Facebook briefly due to a technical issue,” the company said in a statement. “We have now fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Facebook was reportedly down in Japan, Thailand, India, the Philippines and parts of Australia. DownDetector.com reported that it was down in parts of North America, too. The outage also appears to have affected Facebook’s mobile app, and Messenger.
Asia Times staff could not access Facebook in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning. Twitter was also down.
“Something is technically wrong”, read a message on Twitter’s landing page when Asia Times reporters tried to log in. It went on: “Thanks for noticing – we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”
