Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will land in Hong Kong for an unofficial visit on Friday and Saturday before heading to Beijing for the high-profile One Belt, One Road (Obor) summit set for Sunday and Monday.
Robespierre Bolivar, a Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman, said Duterte would attend a Filipino community meeting on Saturday afternoon in Hong Kong, Oriental Daily reported.
Duterte is expected to arrive Hong Kong Friday morning, but he would not be meeting any Hong Kong government officials, Now TV news reported.
Obor has been renamed at the “Belt and Road” initiative and President Xi Jinping will host leaders of 28 nations gathering in Beijing for a summit to map out China’s ambitious new Silk Road project.
It is the second time in two weeks, the leader of a Southeast Asian nation came to Hong Kong, with Indonesia President Joko Widodo on a visit from April 30 to May 1.
Security measures deployed for Widodo would be the same during Duterte’s unofficial visit. A number of Hong Kong Police units, including VIP protection, tactical and escort, will be on duty.
Members of the police’s Counter Terrorism Response Unit would be on stand-by and patrol specific sites.
