A 24-year-old domestic worker from Myanmar was sentenced to four months in prison in Singapore for assaulting her employer’s 72-year-old mother, who had Parkinson’s disease and could not take care of herself.
On July 10 last year, Gracy Law Rice had fed her employer’s mother, Wong Poh Lin, with some porridge for lunch, but became frustrated when the elderly woman was unable to swallow the food correctly, the Straits Times reported. Rice then punched Wong’s twice in chest.
Her employer later saw bruises on Wong’s body and alerted her younger brother, who called the police. An inspection at hospital revealed further cuts and bruises to the elderly woman’s body, which Rice was unable to explain, according to the prosecutor, cited by Straits Times.
Rice, who started working in Singapore for the first time in April last year, pleaded guilty on Wednesday. The maximum penalty for causing hurt is a jail term of two years and a fine up to S$5,000 (US$3,590).
