A firefighter from Coimbatore has been accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend by ramming a motorcycle she was a passenger on in Anna Nagar, Chennai, on Monday evening.

S Ilayaraja was reportedly angry because 47-year-old R Nivedha, a teacher at a government school in Kolavanpalayam in Coimbatore, had ended their seven-year relationship when he got married. She then became romantically involved with L Ganapathi, a 33-year-old engineer who lives in Vajravel Nagar, Kolathur.

The incident took place when she was riding on the back of Ganapathi’s motorcycle, said police officials.

Nivedha died of head injuries on the way to hospital and Ganapathi sustained minor injuries.

Initially, it was believed to be an accident but Ilayaraja confessed to the crime under intense questioning.
