A 30-year-old Mumbai man has been accused of raping two young girls.

The suspect, Suraj Jaswant, who is married and has a one-year-old daughter, allegedly told the victims, aged nine and 13, that he would give them candy and money if they helped him plant saplings. The police arrested him on Tuesday and a case was registered at Ghatkopar police station on Thursday.

The nine-year-old was assaulted outside her house in Saki Naka.

According to police, Jaswar approached the 13-year-old  girl in Ghatkopar and offered her money if she helped him plant trees. “The girl told her father that the man had taken her to a public toilet which was not lit and not in use,” an officer was quoted as saying.

Jaswar has been booked for kidnap and rape under the Indian Penal Code. Sections pertaining to penetrative sexual assault under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act also apply.
